Flex Cushion Pillow Type

"Yes. Basically, I think it looks really good. I think that the demand for 'products that can be wiped off' will increase more and more."

Since December 2021, the dialysis therapy room at Juntendo University School of Medicine’s Juntendo Clinic has been using the ‘Flex Cushion Pillow Type’ for patients in hemodialysis beds.

Could you tell us what kind of pillows was used before we introduced our pillows, and specifically, what problems were faced?

(Chief Kawai) – “Previously, we used pillows and covers commonly used in hospitals. In 2015, after obtaining the Joint Commission International (JCI) certification at our hospital, we have been working to raise the level of infection control, and we have adoptedmethods that aligned with the certification’s standards.

I was looking for a “wipeable pillow” because I wanted to take further infecton control measures and eliminate the hassle of replacing pillows and pillow covers.

Of course, when wiping, I was looking for something that could withstand “rubbing alcohol” and “hypochlorous acid”, but in reality such pillows were limited.

Previously, I used to use something that I think was a bead cushion inside, but the cover can be wiped off.

When we first started using the pillow, we felt that it was very comfortable to use. However, litle by litle, “settling” appeared, the cover was torn, and the elasticity gradually disappeared. In less than a year, we were forced to replace it with a new one because it was getting worn out.

Would you mind telling us your impressions when you first saw our pillows and your impressions when you tried them?

(Chief Kawai) – Yes. In fact, the patient’s opinion about the adoption this time is quite large. The patient was satisfied with the moderate elasticity. It’s not a comparison with the pillow that I’ve been using for a long time, but when I switched to this pillow, the feeling of use was it seems that there was a sense of a so-called stable pillow that was firmly supported by the pillow. There was a patient’s voice saying, “This pillow is better”.

We also heard opinions about pillows every time, so we no longer hear from patients saying, “This pillow is hard to use,” like before, so in that sense, our stress has decreased. I think, and I have a feeling that it will decrease further in the future (laughs).

In fact, it’s been about five months since you introduced the system

(Chief Kawai) – First of all, I appreciate the feedback from patients that it is comfortable to use because it maintains an appropriate level of elasticity.

In addition, since the top and bottom can be reversed in terms of shape, I think it is good that it can be adapted to the preferences of patients who want the high side to be on the neck side and patients who want the low side to be on the neck side.

Next, it is good that it is really easy to “wipe off”.

He used to be able to wipe off his pillow, but the elasticity has decreased, making it more difficult to wipe off. As a result, I couldn’t wipe it off quickly.

The one I introduced this time can be wiped off quickly, so I feel that he keeps it neater and cleaner than the previous one. ”

Director Kawai, Certified Nurse for Dialysis Nursing

In the discussion so far, it seems that the problem of “sagging” was a big issue, but it’s been about 5 months, has there been any problems such as “sagging”?

However, even if the surface is torn, it means that only that part can be repaired, so I am relieved about that.

After actually using the product, do you have any improvements or requests for the product?

(Professor Nakata) – “It would be nice if there were variations in the size of the product. From the perspective of wiping, I think it would be better if there was a more compact size.

In hospitals, where patients change in a short period of time, not only in dialysis rooms, but also in outpatients, I think it would be better to use something that can be wiped off quickly. Since it takes only a short time to use it (on a patient), I don’t think it needs to be that big. In that sense as well, I think it would be nice to have a variety of sizes. You can also cut down on extra costs. “

(Chief Kawai) – “I think the size that I am using now is really good, but I also think it would be nice if the size could be improved.

For example, here we have patients on stretchers, and some hospitalized patients bring their own pillows. In the dialysis room, weight control is also important, so the current pillow is used for zero point adjustment. In such a case, the work of replacing the pillow will also occur. Even when doing such replacement work, having a compact pillow actually reduces the burden on the staff on site. It may be a really small thing, but it makes a big difference for the work in the field.

So it would certainly be nice to have more variation in size.

For example, at the hospital, I use the “diagnostic pillow” that is used in examination rooms. For this reason, pillows that are comfortable to sleep on, can be wiped clean, and are hygienic are designed to fit not only dialysis rooms, but also hospital examination rooms, etc. ”, I think it would be nice to have a little more variation.

(laughs) That’s not bad, but I think it would be nice to have a more subdued color (laughs). “

(Chief Kawai) “Also, just in case, can I confirm about disinfection? Was it OK to use a chlorine-based disinfecting detergent?”

Flex cushion pillow type adopted by Juntendo Clinic dialysis therapy room

Yes. There are no restrictions on concentration due to its chemical resistance, so there is no problem.

(Chief Kawai) – “That point is really helpful. Really. I think that there are quite a few people who are switching to “chlorine-based sanitizing detergents.

From Professor Nakata’s point of view, could you tell us what kind of evaluation you received about the pillows that you introduced this time?

(Professor Nakata)  – “Yes. Basically, I think it looks really good.

In the case of our hospital, the acquisition of JCI certification led to the current “linenless” initiative.

I often used to say, “In our dialysis room, we don’t use sheets or other linens at all.” Even then, there were still many things that surprised me.

However, in the midst of the current corona virus, I think that in the future, although it may not be the case, we will become more and more “linenless,” which does not use linen.

In that sense, I personally think that the market for such “products that can be wiped off”, including Shiga Dry, will continue to increase in demand.

It’s true that when it comes to pillows, I think it’s a matter of personal preference, so I can’t say which one is better.

At the same time, from our point of view, durability is also very important. So, I think it’s still too early to judge the quality of this product at this stage, but for now, I think it’s likely to be durable.

In the future, I would like to continue to check the durability and other aspects together.

It’s not limited to pillows, but from the perspective of a dialysis room, do you have any products, including cushions and mattresses, that would be great?

(Chief Kawai) – “If you take advantage of the good points of Shiga Dry’s products, I think it would be nice to create a cover that can be laid over the mattress and wiped with alcohol or hypochlorous acid. I often wipe it with a rough cloth.

Also, the material is not slippery, right? In hospitals, sometimes the bed and the mattress are not the same size, so the mattress moves. Therefore, it would be convenient if there was something that could cover the entire mattress or put something under it to keep it from moving. “

Professor Nakata and Chief Kawai, thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedules to give us valuable feedback. I am very grateful to him for giving me valuable ideas and perspectives that I could not write down.

Thank you very much.

Flex Cushion Pillow Type

“We searched for a “pillow” that can be wiped with a disinfectant and that can be used without using a cover, and introduced it after consulting with an infection control certified nurse. I am very happy with the ability to use chloric acid.”

From June 2022, Toho University Ohashi Hospital has adopted 28 pieces of the “flex cushion pillow type (pillow type)”

Questionnaire sent by Mr. Naka, Head of Outpatient Department

“In the outpatient clinic, many patients change in a short period of time and use the bed space.

Until now, I used cloth or old-fashioned box pillows with disposable covers. Although the covers were replaced each time, the situation was not perfect from the standpoint of infection prevention.

Therefore, we searched for a “pillow” that could be wiped with a disinfectant and could be used without using a cover, and after consulting with an infection control certified nurse, we introduced your pillow.

Currently, it is used in “outpatient dialysis room”, “chemotherapy room”, “radiation therapy room”, “outpatient treatment room” and “emergency room”.

I am very happy that hypochlorous acid can be used as a countermeasure against covid-19 in addition to alcohol.

In addition, we are happy to be able to reduce the cost of disposable covers and the manpower required to replace covers.

We considered other companies’ products that can be wiped off with a disinfectant like your product, but your product was overwhelmingly popular in terms of “comfort to use” from the patients.

Is it because it fits the tastes and body shapes of Japanese people, which is unique to Japanese manufacturers? Some people are concerned about the sticky texture, but we ask them to bring their own towels, handkerchiefs, etc.

I have just started using it, but I am hoping for durability and ease of repair.

"I was looking for a long-lasting pillow that can be wiped with hypochlorous acid from the perspective of infection control. I decided to purchase this product based on WOC nurses’ judgment from the perspective of preventing pressure ulcers, the fact that it was well received by patients who actually tried it, and the fact that it lasts a long time without becoming saggy.”

From June 2022, “NTT East Kanto Hospital” has been using “Flex Cushion Triangular Type (Irregular/Irregular Sides Long)” and “Flex Cushion Pillow Type”.

What was the problem you had before using our product, and did you solve the problem after actually using it?

Also, what was the decisive factor in choosing the product you are using out of the many available?

  • The “pillow” that I used to use was a bead cushion type, and after about half a year, it was worn out and the surface peeled off, so I had to replace it once a year.

  • Even if the price of one “pillow” is cheap, if you buy it in bulk, it will be expensive, so from the perspective of infection control, I was looking for a long-lasting pillow that can be wiped with hypochlorous acid.

  • The bead cushion type “pillow” that was used in the past is not elastic and has no height, so there are times when inpatients are not satisfied. was taken to the dialysis room.

If a patient forgets to bring a “pillow,” the ward nurse will have to bring the “pillow” back to the dialysis room, which is a hassle for busy ward nurses

  • A Shiga Dry Wizards sales representative introduced us to the “body-use cushion (pillow type/irregular sides/irregular sides long)”, and we were able to make decisions from the perspective of preventing pressure ulcers from WOC nurses and actually using them with patients. I decided to purchase it because it was well received when I tried it, and because it lasts a long time without sagging.

  • I’ve only been using it for a few months, so I don’t know how it’s sagging yet. The fact that it can be wiped with hypochlorous acid is an important point, but durability is also important, so we’ll have to make a decision on that in the future.

What points are you satisfied with after actually using the product?

  • When patients actually used the “pillow type”, it was more popular than the “pillow” they used before, and they no longer bothered to bring it from the ward.

  • There are large and small sizes for the “Body Interchangeable Cushion (Large Sides/Long Sides)”, so I think it would be good to be able to choose according to the size of the patient’s body.

  • It is easy to use because it fits the patient’s body easily. If it is made of a slippery material, the patient’s body will shift, so I think it is also good in terms of fixing the patient’s position.

  • It’s not that heavy, so it’s easy to carry around

  • Patients have different comfortable positions depending on their disease, treatment, and condition. Body cushions come in a variety of shapes, so I think it’s great that they can be used in combination.

  • The “pillow type” seems to be just right for raising both legs, and some patients use it below their knees. For example, it is helpful to be able to use a combination of a “pillow type” and a “body-passing cushion (irregular/irregular long)” in order to maintain good limb position with a femoral neck fracture

Superflex AX series (AX85/AX100/AX150)

"We use it for a maximum of 24 hours on one patient. We use it as a pressure ulcer prevention mattress until we can get up after surgery."

The “Shonan Kamakura Artificial Joint Center” used the “Super Flex A Series” at the beginning of its introduction and switched to the “Super Flex AX Series” from July 2019

First of all, could you tell us about the characteristics of your hospital?

“Yes. Our hospital specializes in artificial hip joints, so in that sense, I think it is a special hospital. It must be the first hospital specializing in hip joints.”

Specifically, what kind of patients do you have?

“Most of the patients are in their 50s to 70s. On average, the majority of patients are in their 60s to 70s. 70% to 80% are women, and the reason why hip joints get worse is because most of them are around that age.”

“Another feature is that all the patients are replaced about once a week.”

Head Nurse K
Head Nurse K

Among the characteristics of your hospital, could you tell us why you use Superflex and what are the good points about using it?

“When I came here, they had already been hired, so to be honest, I don’t know the exact circumstances that led to their introduction. Superflex is used by post-surgery patients for a maximum of 24 hours, and for short-term patients, 15 to 16 hours after surgery to treat pressure ulcers. ”

“To be a little more specific, the patient will be asked to stay in bed for about one night after surgery. There are also many of course, a nurse will intervene and change the position, but if you use a normal mattress, you will have to sleep for a long time, so there is concern about pressure ulcers. Therefore, it is currently used as a countermeasure against pressure ulcers during that time. ”

“Many people will be able to get out of bed the day after surgery, usually in the morning, so we have been using the Super Flex until then. ”

“The maximum use is one day, but if a pressure ulcer develops, the discharge from the hospital may be postponed. In that respect, I’m satisfied with the fact that I haven’t had any problems with pressure ulcers by using Super Flex.”

“Of course, there is also the option of air mattresses, but air mattresses take time to prepare and adjust. It’s hard, too.”

How many surgeries are there per day?

“That’s right. It takes one day. The work of preparing 5 to 6 air mattresses and putting them in and out is quite burdensome in terms of time and labor. For the nurses and staff, reducing the burden is also important, so being able to easily put it in and take it out may be one of the reasons why we chose the current mattress.”

“The fact that it is easy to clean is also very helpful. You don’t have to wash it over and over again, and nothing will soak into it, so it’s very easy to clean”

In fact, what do you do after it has been used by one person?

“It can be wiped clean and dried. In that sense, it is very easy to use. In this day and age, people are very concerned about disinfection, and bacteria and viruses are also a concern, and I think mattresses are basically one of the places where bacteria can grow the most.”

“In the past, I used to wash all my mattresses and other items once every few months. I’m very worried about infection, so I think that’s a very good point.”

Also, I believe that you introduced a thicker one at the timing of contract renewal (switching) this time. Could you tell us the reason for that?

“Yes. In such a case, if you use a thin mattress, you may sink into it, so thought that it would be better to have a thicker mattress when switching this time, so introduced it. ”

At the time of the switch, you introduced a lightweight model called the AX series (about 2/3 the weight of the A series). How do you feel?

“It’s a little lighter than the previous one, so it’s easier. Even so, it is quite difficult to go in and out with a mattress. In this case, the nursing assistant is the main one who takes in and out. ”

Do you have any problems or dissatisfaction other than weight?

“First of all, I think that it is easy to sweat.”

Does that mean it’s easy to get steamy?

“Yes. It’s easy to get stuffy.”

“Also, the material is soft, so there are people who have pain in their lower back.”

Does that mean it’s too soft?

“However, if you sink, your back may hurt if you have a bad back. Sometimes I hear people say that their backs hurt after sleeping all night. “

That’s an important point to improve.

“However, I personally think that mattress is very good for preventing pressure ulcers, so rather than improving the mattress itself, I feel that it would be nice if there was something extra.”

What do you mean by when you say, “something extra”?

“In short, for patients with low back pain, it would be completely different if you put something a little higher on your back or something like a hard mattress. I think it would be nice if there was something you could stick in. In a way, it’s like a cushion

I am going to use it as an example. I will show you again when I have a good one

Although not mentioned in this interview: For those with bad backs, we recommend the 100% natural latex Superflex A series. The A series eliminates sinking due to its high density and high rebound. However, it weighs more than his AX series.

Natural latex pushes back the body pressure of each part of the patient (for example, the head, sacrum, calcaneus, etc.) with the same repulsive force, so the center of gravity of the body is aligned, which leads to the reduction of back pain.

“I can’t really get pressure ulcers after that, so in that sense, I’m very satisfied.”

Despite your busy schedule, you gave us valuable information. Chief Nurse K, thank you very much.

2.Flex cushion (for wheelchair)

“I would like to see patients using air mattresses as a countermeasure for pressure ulcers use Super Flex as an option when transitioning from air mattresses.”

From July 2019, “Ofuna Central Hospital” switched from the “Super Flex A Series”, which had been used for many years, to the “Super Flex AX Series”.Flex cushions (for wheelchairs) also available.

Note 1) A Series: Mattresses with natural latex as the base material

Note 2) AX Series: A lightweight mattress model whose base material is a combination of natural latex and urethane.

[1] In 2019, you switched from the “A series” to the lightweight model “AX series”. How was it?

(Mr. M) – “When I came to our hospital a few years ago, the ‘A series’ of Super Flex (hereafter referred to as SF) had already been adopted. To be honest, the first “SF (A series)” that I saw had already been too active, and had deteriorated considerably. As a result, I had the impression that it was not fully functioning.

However, last year, I was replaced with a new one, and I think that the body pressure distribution is ‘strongly done’.

(Ms.M) – “Also, compared to the previous one (A series), I wonder if this AX series this time is able to evaporate or cover stuffiness. When I first saw it, I wondered what happened to transpiration. In our clinic, we also use bed sheets and waterproof sheets. I was a little concerned about the feeling of stuffiness when used in conjunction with it, so I was worried about that. But I don’t feel like that it’s that stuffy. The fact that it is easy to remove dirt is also very good

Ms. H and Ms. M
Ms. H (left) and Ms. M (right)

The “Super Flex A Series” used by Ofuna Central Hospital is the old A Series

(Ms. H) – “Yes. It’s true that excrement can get dirty, but it can be wiped clean, so you can keep it clean. With other mattresses, stains will inevitably remain. However, SF can be cleaned with a quick wipe, so the burden on the staff is lightened, and I think it is good from the patient’s point of view. “

[2] Could you tell us about the situation where you actually use the mattresses and wheelchair cushions, how you feel about them, and what you think about them?

(Mr. M) – “As Chief H is in the community comprehensive care ward, and until now, patients in the pre- rehabilitation stage have been using it as an air mattress or as a mattress when she gets off, In terms of utilization around that, Chief H is the best, and I think she feels it, but what do you think?”

(Ms. H) – “Yes. With an air mattress, when the patient gets up and puts their hands on it, it may be too fluffy and they may not be able to use their strength and balance. And when you put your shoes on, when you’re sitting on the edge of the seat, you’re not stable, so the risk of falling is the highest.

However, in today’s SF, it is stable, so the patient can get off easily, put on shoes smoothly, and can stand up. I think that point is very good.

Also, because the patient can get up quickly, it doesn’t mean that they are able to move right away. Therefore, it is not possible to stop pressure ulcer prevention immediately.

If you change from an air mattress to an SF at that time, it will be easier for you to roll over yourself. In addition, it has good pressure distribution, which helps prevent pressure ulcers. I think it is especially good for thin patients in the rehabilitation period and patients who have lost muscle strength.”

Flex cushion for wheelchair
Flex cushion for wheelchair (6 cm thick)

(Ms. M) – “During the period from rehabilitation to independence, there is a risk of recurrence of pressure ulcers. The class above it will be an air mat.

In such a situation, when returning from an air mattress to a standard mattress, I sometimes use another body pressure dispersion mattress that is not SF. However, when it comes to thickness and functionality, the body pressure dispersion force will inevitably fall.

Therefore, I would like patients who have been using air mattresses as a countermeasure against pressure ulcers to use SF first as an option when transitioning from air mattresses as the next step.

Right now, SF is the best, and I think it’s suitable for body pressure dispersion. “

(Ms. M) – “Actually, I think it would be good if we could put a little more effort into that. Now that we’re new, if we have SF, we’ll be less worried about the risk of pressure ulcers when removing the air mattress. I think it will become possible to make the transition a little easier.

In that sense, I think that the current SF (AX series), which is properly made with depth, is by far better than the “SF after being too active (A series)” when I first saw it. ”

(Ms. M) – “Now we also rent cushions for wheelchairs. There were many cases where I received a report that they had a pressure ulcer.

But now, I use flex cushions (for wheelchairs) for most of the wheelchairs in the hospital ward, and for the past year, I have never heard of anyone developing pressure ulcers even though they have been sitting for long periods of time. ”

(Ms. M) – “The flex cushion is non-slip and holds firmly. We get a lot of requests saying, ‘I want to sit on that,’ so we’re asked to add it from the field, so I think the evaluation from the field is very good. ”

(Ms. H) -“Patients tell me, ‘Bring me that.'” So, when there weren’t many, I was looking around, looking around, and I was like, ‘No, no, no, ah~, I’m sitting~’ (laughs).

(Ms. M) – “I think that patients also feel comfortable sitting. Before I introduced it, they were sitting with sciatica slip. But now, most patients are sitting with good posture even if they sit for a long time. “

(Ms. H) – “Yes. You can sit properly. I think the weight is just right, and it is firmly fixed.”

[3] To change the topic a little, could you tell us your evaluation of the “Careg Cushion” (Positioning Cushion) that we provided as a demonstration the other day?

(Ms. M) – “There are requests from the site that ‘I want to use it’. It’s a little heavy, isn’t it? When I received it, I thought it would be difficult to use a heavy one on site. Because of the weight, I wondered, “How is it?” when changing positions.

However, the ward staff commented, “It can be fixed firmly.” There are quite a few patients who unavoidably pull it out by themselves, but he didn’t have that at all. In addition, he said that even when the patient is in the lateral recumbency position, the patient’s weight does not cause the patient to slip, and the patient is able to fix it firmly.

In that sense, the evaluation from the ward staff was “good” more than I expected. ”

(Ms. M) – “The cover is waterproof, so I think it’s good that it doesn’t soak inside. I was worried that it would get a little stuffy, but surprisingly it didn’t feel stuffy.

As a result, if you don’t have to wash the contents, the site will be saved.

I thought it would be nice to be able to wash everything I’m using now if the contents get dirty, but it takes a long time to dry. In that sense, even if it gets dirty, you only have to wash the cover, so I think it’s better.”

Careg Cushion (Positioning Cushion)
Natural rubber tip is biased and free from settling. Careg Cushion (Positioning Cushion)

[4] Do you have any problems with the mattress (AX series), ?

(Ms. H) “I’m sorry to say that it’s lighter, but the AX series is still heavy when you carry it.

(Ms. M) “When I try to hold it by myself, it’s a bit difficult. I just need to wipe it down, so it would be nice if I could pick it up and wipe it down a little more easily. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something like a “starting point” like this?”

Regarding the handle, residue and desquamation may adhere to the handle, and it may become a hotbed for bacteria, so I would like to explain again that it is not currently attached from the perspective of infection control and infection prevention

[5] If you have any other comments or requests regarding our services, sales methods, products, etc., please let us know.

(Ms. M) “From the background of patients in our hospital, the ratio of SF and air mattresses used is large, so we would like to increase the number of SFs a little more at the site. As a product, I really feel that it has improved. As someone who hasn’t used it before, I feel like, “Oh, that’s really cool.”

(Ms. M) “And the lack of a cover may be a big reason. With a cover, it’s certainly easier to carry, but there’s still a risk of infection. The current cover type will soak in to a certain extent, so in that sense, the fact that there is no cover is also an advantage.

In Case of our clinic, now we put a piece of pat in it and put a sheet on top of it. I think it’s better to use the sheets directly. I think I can use SF more effectively if I use special sheets that stay in place. “

(Ms. M) “I also like the fact that SF doesn’t slip from the bed frame. Because it is not slippery. The regular standard mats and air mats can be slippery. In that respect, SF does not move and does not shift. It is also effective when you catch up. In that sense, it’s a little hard to hold, but I think the fact that it doesn’t have a cover is also very important in terms of infection control. ”

Thank you very much to the nurses Ms. M and H for taking time out of their busy schedules to share valuable stories with us

“Especially in the dialysis room, it is necessary to take measures against blood contamination, vomit, and infectious diseases, so I think the most important thing is that it can be cleaned with hypochlorous acid.”"

Since September 2019, “Saitomo Kawaguchi Clinic” has been using “Super Flex A Series / AX Series” and “Flex Cushion” in its “dialysis room” and “hospital ward” respectively.

Currently, our mattresses are being used in both dialysis rooms and hospital wards. First of all, could the dialysis room ask a question?

(Ms. M) “First of all, blood splattering and bleeding often occur during hemodialysis treatment.

Conventional mattresses have to be washed and dried, and that requires a certain amount of effort.

There are also hygiene measures that are unique to the dialysis room. Under such circumstances, we think that the best advantage of this Shiga Dry mattress is that it can be disinfected with hypochlorous acid. It can be easily cleaned on site, and it is really useful in terms of hygiene and labor. “

(Ms. M) “In the case of dialysis, one bed is inevitably used by an unspecified number of people. I think that this is probably a source of trouble in any dialysis room. In addition, the elderly may need to change diapers. In this respect, the absolute number of mattresses is still small. However, after using it for a year, I found that it was not so much about the corona crisis as it was about the original problem of dialysis rooms, “to ensure hygiene for the next person who uses it,” and the fact that on-site work was extremely easy. Especially in the dialysis room, it is necessary to take measures against blood contamination, vomit, and infectious diseases, so I think the most important thing is that it can be cleaned with hypochlorous acid.”

Chief nurse M (right), ward chief nurse T (left), dialysis room chief nurse K

How are you doing in the hospital ward?

(Ms. T) “In the ward, multiple patients don’t share the same bed like in a dialysis room. Until you use Shiga Dry’s mattress, put a bed pad and sheets on top of the mattress.

I heard that Shiga Dry’s products can be used without a bed pad, so I use only the sheets without a bed pad. In the case of our hospital, there are many bedridden patients, but I don’t think there was a current situation where they were stuffy and troubled. ”

(Ms. T) “Of course, we use air mattresses when the risk of pressure ulcers is high, but the number of air mattresses is limited, so for other patients, we recommend using Shiga Dry mattresses. I feel like I am being taken care of.

In our clinic, most people wear diapers. Even the mattress doesn’t get dirty very often. It’s also easy to change sheets. ”

(Ms. T) “Also, if there is a patient who has a fever right now, I may suspect corona just in case. I’m going to keep you in isolation until it’s clarified. Even in that case, I think it’s one of the peace of mind that the bed and mattress can be cleaned after the judgment. Until now, a normal cloth mat could not clean up that far. In the case of cloth mats, it can get very messy when it gets dirty.

In that sense, I think it’s an advantage to be able to clean everything, including the mattress, after the patient is discharged from the hospital.

After all, the dialysis room will all be sent for cleaning. ” (Ms. M) “Yes.

(Ms. T) “Sending it out for cleaning is costly. In that respect, I think it’s a big advantage to be able to deal with contamination here.”

(Mr. M) “Right now, the number of Shiga Dry’s mattresses is still small, but if the absolute number increases in the future, I think it will be
good in terms of cost.

Also, during Obon and Golden Week, when the cleaning company is closed, the stock of mattresses that can be replaced may be low. At that time, I think that the point that she will be under pressure if the staff does not have spares can be improved.”

(Ms. M) “In general, dialysis requires preparation and countermeasures against needle removal accidents. So, in terms of preparing for such needle removal accidents, I think it would be helpful for the site if we could increase the number.”

Next, could you tell us about your evaluation of the positioning cushion?

(Ms. T) “I think that the cushions used in the hospital ward are good because even the small cushions can be wiped clean after being used on the patient.

Anything made of cloth will have to be washed. Also, there are some items that cannot be washed. She can’t wash things, so she ends up wondering what to do, and some things lose their shape when washed. “

(Ms. M) “With cloth covers, the cover will get dirty and the color will change. (Ms. T-) “When the blood splatters, it cannot be washed off.”

(Ms. M) “Even in the dialysis room, there are paralyzed patients who cannot roll over on their own, so the staff will change the position of the patient. In such cases, we use a lot of cushions, It helps me a lot.”

(Ms. M) “Dialysis takes about 4 to 5 hours. Moreover, there are elderly people, paralyzed people, and people who have had their legs amputated. Especially for such people, I think that a cushion can alleviate the pain.

In addition, there are problems with complications, so considering the future, I think it will be expensive, but I think that a cushion that can be cleaned with hypochlorous acid is really advantageous. ”

Do you have any requests for positioning cushions?

(Ms .M) “I would like to see more variations in terms of angles. Patients have different body shapes. In fact, there are things that you cannot understand just by looking at the catalog. Some of our patients are in their 20s and 30s, so I think it would be nice to have some variation.”

(Ms. T) “The angles of the triangular cushions are now around 30 degrees and 60 degrees, but I think it would be nice to have something in between.”

(Ms. M) “I think it’s a little too gentle. It might be better to have something with a little more angle.”

(Ms. T) “Are there any other facilities that have problems with pressure ulcers on their heads, ears, or heels? However, when the knee is bent due to contracture, the heel hits it, and when the general condition worsens, pressure ulcers may begin to form on the heel. I think there should be something that can somehow cover it well..”

  • With the philosophy of “providing patients with warm, high-quality medical care,” they operate “Saitomo Kawaguchi Clinic,” which I interviewed this time, “Saitomo Soka Hospital,” and “Saitomo Yashio Clinic.”

  • For pressure ulcers in the ears, we will introduce a method of using a custom-made perforated pillow or a separate type pillow, and for pressure ulcers on the heels, we will introduce methods to use pillows and cushions for maintaining posture, such as trapezoids.

“We received an opinion from Ms A.K a WOC certified nurse for skin and continence care, about the “Body Pressure Dispersion Mattress Super Flex AX Series” that she actually uses.

Please tell us about any problems you had before using our products

I was worried that the mattress would be reused, so I was worried if it was properly disinfected

What points are you satisfied with after actually using it?

Because it is easy to disinfect, there is a sense of security

Please feel free to comment on your impressions of our company and products

  • It has higher resilience than urethane mats, but some users say that it is more comfortable to sleep on than urethane mats.
  • Easy to rehabilitate

“(Particularly, the wheelchair cushion and the trapezoidal body intercourse cushion) had almost no misalignment and maintained stable positioning. rice field." “It is possible to wipe with alcohol or sodium hypochlorite solution, and once it is wiped, it can be used immediately after wiping, which is not only an infection control measure, but also reduces the burden on nursing assistants and is appreciated by the staff at the site. ”

Since July 2021, “Maki Hospital” has been using flex cushions (4 cm thick) and positioning cushions (scalene type) flex cushions (3 sizes) for wheelchairs.

At our clinic, we have introduced “flex cushion (for wheelchairs)”, “irregular intercourse cushion” and “careg cushion (3 sizes)”.

We believe that the basics of positioning cushions are to maintain good posture. The biggest factor is stability. He believes that a stable position is comfortable for patients without fatigue or pain.

Also, during the demonstration, the person in charge gave me a photo of an example of how to use the cushion modeled on myself, so I was able to use it as a reference to try it on the patient.

Especially the wheelchair cushion and scalene interbody cushion; My first impression was that there was almost no misalignment and stable positioning was maintained.

It was hard to slip, held my body firmly, and fixed it without slipping.

For that reason, Shiga Dry’s cushion was evaluated as a “cushion that does not slip” by rehabilitation staff and those who were using it.

“By wiping down the mattress after a patient leaves the hospital, we are able to prepare the environment for the next hospitalization immediately.”

From January 2021, the Gunma Chuo Medical Consumers’ Cooperative has a rental contract for a body pressure dispersion mattress (Super Flex AX85). Careg Cushion Series”) has a rental contract

Answer from head nurse Satomi Arai

About Superflex A85

[1] About the reason for renting

“I was concerned about not only the number of hospitalizations with bedsores, but also the increasing number of reports of bed sores. However, it was necessary to prepare a budget for the replacement in advance, and Mr. Yoshida (Shiga Dry Wizards) suddenly appeared at this place. It was perfect timing.

About the decisive factor for [2]

  • The product can be wiped and disinfected as easily as possible to prevent infection
  • It is made of natural materials and is resistant to “weakness”, and the posture is stable when “sit on the edge”.
  • Because it is a rental, there is no lump sum burden on management
  • Because it is a rental, it must be well maintained

[3] Impressions after actually using the product

In the beds dedicated to COVID-19 infections, the mattresses are wiped clean after the patient leaves the hospital, so that the next hospitalization environment can be immediately prepared

About flex cushions

[1] About rental status

  • Each ward purchased the necessary cushions to maintain posture, but there was a history of choosing the least expensive cushions possible

  • In particular, due to the spread of COVID-19, we had to send patients out for cleaning every time they were discharged from the hospital, resulting in an increase in cleaning fees and a shortage of cushions

[2] Concerning the decisive factors for hiring

  • It should be possible to wash off when contaminated and wipe off with alcohol or hypochlorous acid.
  • Ready to use

  • Reduced cleaning fees

  • By combining various shapes, it is possible to devise ideas that suit the positioning

We also received feedback from on-site staff regarding the actual feeling of use of the mattress.

From physical therapist Ryosuke Tajima

  • Because of its elasticity, when assisting the patient in getting up, he became able to use his own strength to get up
  • Stable sitting position

From a nursing site

  • Covid-19 beds are wiped and disinfected after a patient’s bed is changed, and the sheets can be changed immediately. We are able to quickly prepare hospital rooms for the patients who need them, and we have achieved effective hospital bed management. Above all, it saves time and effort as an infection control measure

  • Even in a general hospital ward, even if there is liquid contamination, it is waterproof and can be disinfected, so it is hygienic.

We also received feedback from the staff on-site regarding the actual usability of the cushions

  • Triangular positioning for patients who lose their posture or when changing positions.
  • The cushion is very good
  • In the past, various types of cloth cushions were used. I think it’s good to have this product now because it’s consistent
  • It is good that dirt can be reduced by wiping with alcohol.
  • Currently, the “ short” and “ long” triangular ones are mainly used for intercourse of the upper body only with the short one and the whole body with the longer one
  • Various sizes are available and can be selected according to the physique of the patient
  • It is convenient because it is hard to get dirty and can be wiped with alcohol if it gets dirty
  • Easy to clean. Easy to store
  • Good cushioning. Painless

We would like to express our gratitude to all the staff, including Nursing Director Arai of Maebashi Kyoritsu Hospital, for their valuable opinions despite their busy schedules

All the employees at Maebashi Kyoritsu Hospital will continue to deliver better products so that they can continue to be of use to the patients

“Ishioka Daiichi Hospital” has been using the “Super Flex A Series” for many years. Since March 2020, we have been using 45 sheets of the lightweight “Super Flex AX Series”

“I was impressed by the fact that the natural rubber material does not break even if an egg is dropped on it, and I have been using it for over 15 years.

Except for mattresses with sensors, most of them use Shiga Dry’s “Superflex” (currently “Superflex AX series” is used).

We hope that by introducing a new mattress that is easier to carry around, we can reduce the burden on

staff and prevent pressure ulcers by relieving pressure on patients. “

"Firstly, it can prevent bedsores. Rashes also no longer occur so frequently. Secondly, when it gets dirty, we are able to clean it by wiping it, so we can maintain good hygiene all day long. Patients are also 'able to sleep better'. Finally, we were able to order custom sizes, which is another great point about it."

Since October 2009, Akitsuryouikuen has officially used our products.

[1] Prior to using our products, were there any issues you were troubled with or any problems you wished to solve?

“Prior to using the Shigadry’s mattress, we were using urethane memory foam mattresses and standard cloth-based mattresses. Although the urethane memory foam mattress was soft and great, this is a group home for patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities, so some patients have

scoliosis, contractures, or deformities. So even if you put the diaper perfectly, it leaks often, and inevitably, the sheets and the mattress are stained frequently.”

“Until five years ago, due to the thoughts of the former chairman and the motto of Akitsuryouikuen, ‘To treat as a person’, we were using cloth diapers instead of paper diapers. For that reason, when compared to a standard hospital, we probably had to replace sheets far more often.

We also had patients with gastroesophageal reflux, who vomited frequently.

Due to such incidences, not only sheets but mattresses also used to get stained. The staff would wash them by hand, one by one, and then dry it under the sun. However, if we dry them under the sun, the urethane foam gets hardened and deteriorates quickly. So the mattresses that are told to last for ten years are too hard to use after only two or three years. In these circumstances, the staff was discussing among themselves what a problem this posed.”

“It was at these times that Shigadry recommended us their mattresses.”

At that time, in the Tokyo branch of our company, it was the first time for our products to be used in a group home specialized for severe disabilities, so we specially requested that they be more detailed in their answer.

[2] How was it when you used the product (Superflex) from our company?

“At first, we were very curious about what kind of mattress it would be (haha). When we did use it, we received a lot of requests from the staff, who said that they wanted to use it more. Regarding the one we were using previously, it would cause redness on some patients if they were to lie on their side a little. At that time, we had children who were three or five years old and couldn’t turn around properly by themselves, so we had to help them turn around. Even so, there were many patients who would get redness on some part of their skin, which was troubling the staff. Then, we were introduced to Superflex.

Honestly, we were anxious about using it, so we meticulously judged the mattress for each and every patient.”

“After that, we could tell them, ‘Redness is no longer there, is it?’ or ‘You can sleep a lot better, no?’, and so we officially started using the mattresses.”

Head Nurse, Ms. Ikuko Nozuka, who has spoken to us

[3] Could you tell us the merits of using the products from our company? Also, having actually used it, could you tell us if the problems you were having previously were solved by using this mattress?

“Firstly, it can prevent bedsores. Rashes also no longer occur so frequently. Secondly, when it gets dirty, we are able to clean it by wiping it, so we can maintain good hygiene all day long. Patients are also ‘able to sleep better’. Finally, we were able to order custom sizes, which is another great point about it.”

“All staff are happy as it is easy to disinfect the mattress. As I have said previously, if it soaks all the way, it is difficult to know how clean it is, even if you wash it properly. Everyone is worried that perhaps whatever is soaked in could come out someday.

However, for Superflex, we can clean it by just wiping the coating on the surface, so after it gets dirty, the staff only needs to spray it with alcohol and change the sheets.

Of course, for norovirus, we are using hypochlorous acid, but usually, when we are just exchanging the sheets, we are disinfecting them with rubbing alcohol.

Back then, it would soak all the way inside the mattress, but it no longer happens. This helps us tremendously. There is a huge difference in time and effort spent.”

“Of course, even for bedsore prevention. We had a Bedsore Conference two or three days ago, and we requested that the staff evaluate the mattresses. As expected, the incidence of bedsores was very small. Usually we have a greater number of younger patients, and their nutritional balance is also good, so the risk of bedsores isn’t so high. But after starting to use Superflex, patients stopped getting severe bedsores. In fact, we no longer have any cases like that.

Previously, patients used to spend their daytime in playrooms. But now, after the coronavirus pandemic, the perspective of nursing has started to change, so nowadays patients are spending their time on their personal beds. Even if they do spend their entire time lying on the bed, not one person gets redness. There were no reports last year, either.

We had to change the patient’s position every hour in the past and do many more things for bedsore prevention, but now patients can spend two or even three hours in the same position without developing any redness or compression.”

“Although we are no longer using it, we were using a 4cm-thick mattress in the playroom when it was open for use. This was also great to use. If it was thicker, patients who are able to walk could trip over it, so this mattress did not pose any problems like that.”

-I believe you said that patients are able to “sleep a lot better”…

“Yes. How do I say it… It has satisfying elasticity, and I get the impression that the patients are able to sleep a lot deeply.”

“Although it is a pity that we are unable to relay the opinions of the patients, objectively speaking, we are only able to judge it through its improvement in sleep quality and its reduction in the development of redness.”

“Again, regarding the size of the mattress, it helps us a lot that we are able to custom order specific sizes. Currently, all beds are the same size, but when we started using Shigadry’s mattresses, bed sizes were all inconsistent, so the fact that we were able to custom order specific sizes has helped us greatly.”

Akitsuryouikuen, founded by the first chairman, Mr. Kumakichi Kusano, in 1958, with the wish to "create a paradise for those children"

Do you have any requests for our company or any ideas on a product that you wish to have?

“The staff say that although the lamination prevents dirt from seeping in, it creates a stuffy feeling for the patients.

Among the admitted patients, there are some who are unable to perform thermal homeostasis. In such patients, the body’s contracture is severe, so they perspire often. I wish that the mattress had better ventilation… We discussed that it would be a lot more comfortable with such a feature, but I believe that it’s not so easy to implement it, is it?”

Yes. Even though it is a contrasting action, we have considered that a topic to be discussed. Currently, although it is in the testing phase, Honeycomb Dry Pad (New Ver.) will be released soon. Further information will be released at a later date.

“Also, ‘heavy’ (haha). I’m like “Can’t you even carry this?”, but it definitely is a little heavy. Younger staff often voice that they ‘Can’t carry!’ or ‘Can’t move!’ (haha). However, for this facility, we do not need to exchange mattresses so often. So it’s only a problem if something were to happen.”

“Also, it does not stay upright when you store them.”

“The Bedsore Council suggested adding handles to them, but won’t it make them easier to break by concentrating the pressure there?”

On the topic of handles, it is a much bigger issue than breaking for unsanitary fluid and dirt to attach to the handle and create an unhygienic environment around the patient. Therefore, from the perspective of infection control and prevention, we politely decline the addition of a handle

“That is true. It won’t be good if that happens”.

Also regarding the weight of the mattress, we have a light-weight model (the AX series), which combines both latex and urethane. This is a pressure mattress as well, so if you need to move around more often, we recommend the AX series, which is currently available as a sample

“Although we prefer the A series for the standard bed mattress, we will be using the mattresses we received as samples during group activities of aroma relaxation and massages.”

As they seem to be used temporarily, one choice would be to use thinner mattresses with a thickness of 4 cm or 6 cm.

“I have heard that some other facilities use pillows as a countermeasure to bedsores on the ears. Prevention measures of bedsores on narrow areas such as the ears are not my field of expertise, but the physical therapist’s, so I would like to discuss this matter with the physical therapist as well.”

For bedsores on the ears, we are able to prevent them by making a hole in the Since we have separate types of pillows as well, we could discuss this matter with your PT later.

“If we can prevent the bedsores on the ear by cutting a hole in the pillow, is it actually possible to do something similar for the heels? Patients in poor health require IV drips, and we are unable to use their hands sometimes, so we have to use their legs instead. This would be very useful in such situations.”

For bedsores on the heels, we have posture support cushions such as Pillow Type and Scalene. We are able to combine them in many ways to use them differently, so please let us discuss this as well later

“Even for us, we would be very happy if the people who made them were able to hear our voices. I think it’s great to have some form of connection with the creators of the products. We are happy that we were able to meet the people from head office today. Thank you very much.”

Thank you, Ms. Nozuka, for taking your time to answer us on such important matters. Thank you very much

[1] After having used it, what features of it are you satisfied with? Furthermore, were any problems you were having previously resolved by using our products?

  • We are able to wipe it if urine leak happens, and continue using it.
  • When the mattress we were using previously got dirty, it would be stained, discolored, and unhygienic, but that is no longer an issue

[2] What made you choose the products you are using currently from the variety of other products on the market? (This was questioned not in the survey, but when we personally met them.)

(Speaking of the majority of the standard mattress.) Initially, it is good, but after using it for several years, it sags in the shape of the body, which is not suitable for the patients of our facility. However, Shigadry’s mattress is able to maintain its high quality for a long period of time, so we evaluated it to be the best mattress.

[3] If you have any comments from the staff or the users of the mattress, please let us know

  • It is easy to exchange the sheets, and ‘wrinkles’ do not form much
  • Due to friction, ‘wrinkles’ are less likely to form between the mattress and the sheets
  • Elasticity is good
  • It repels urine, so it is easy to clean
  • Although it stops creases from forming, it makes it difficult to put in the sheets

[4] Do you have any requests or any products that you wish to have?

  • I think it’s a good idea to use mesh sheets for patients who perspire a lot.

2. Safety Fence Set

"Their family is happy about it. Even patients seem a lot more lively with it."

In 2020, Wagen Rehabilitation Hospital Nagatake purchased the Superflex A Series and Safety Fence Set. The Safety Fence Set is used in place of the Pool Bed (A product with a bed mattress inside the standard inflatable pool, that allows the user to stretch their limbs freely and safely), which was previously used

[1] Did you have any problems that you wished to solve prior to using our products?

(Mr. T): “This is a relatively new group home, and this year will be our eighth year. We started using Shigadry’s products last year (2020). Last year, being our seventh year, we felt that we needed to renew the mattresses, so we started searching for them. At the same time, we were trying to improve the Pool Bed on certain parts by trial and error, and that’s when the workers from Shigadry recommended us their products.”

(Mr. T): “Many young people are admitted here. We felt that we needed to provide an environment where the patients are able to move and stretch freely, so, previously, we were using a bed mattress in a fairly large inflatable pool. Since it is an inflatable pool, it would leak air often when a hole formed, so every morning, we had to check it properly and then inflate it. For that reason, if it became unusable, we would have to purchase a new one. So we had to renew it five to six times per patient per year. There are patients who use the Pool Bed only for short periods of time, so gradually, the annual cost of purchase increased. This troubled us greatly as we were trying to reduce the cost of purchase and the effort taken to clean it every morning while giving the patients the option to move freely and safely”.

Service Supervisor, Chief Clerk, Mr. T (left), and Care Worker, Manager, Mr. K, who kindly spoke to us

[2] What made you choose the products you are using currently from the variety of other products on the market?

(Mr. T): “After receiving the offer to use the sample many times, I felt that this mattress was suitable for our patients, so I discussed with my superiors, and we decided to gradually increase the number of Superflex Mattresses in use every year. Also, while I was explaining the features of the Pool Bed, the workers from Shigadry gave us great advice on this matter, and I am very thankful for it.”

Speaking of the mattress, what kind of patients are you prioritizing with it?

(Mr. T): “Hmm… We prioritize patients such as people who are prone to bedsores, people who perspire a lot, or people who have urinary incontinence.”

I see .. Could you tell us about how you feel about it or any good points about it after having used it?

(Mr. T): “It is very easy to maintain it. For short term users, it’s a lot easier to set up and clean the bed after they have used it. Then for long term users, it takes a lot less effort to clean around it every day, so it helps us a lot.”

(Mr. T): “Also, considering the safety of the users, we were using a thinner mattress back then, but after having received the advice from Shigadry, we started using a thicker one, and it feels like patients are able to sleep a lot better.”

I see… So they are able to sleep better at night?

(Mr. T) “Yes. I think so.”

I believe you said that the patients are lively after using the Safety Fence Set, which was completed through trial and error. Could you tell us more in detail about it?

(Mr. T) “Yes. Their family is also happy about it. Although children can stretch and move in a simple hospital bed, in the end, it’s still a simple bed. Also, there are families that care about hygiene, so when we introduced them to the newly made mattress, they were joyfully surprised, remarking how clean and beautiful it was. To add to that, we have users who are students or young patients as well. To see that they are able to move their limbs energetically without worrying about holes or air leaks makes us feel that they feel truly lively.”

(Mr. T): “The inflatable pool was too soft, so it was difficult to stand on the knees, but the users are able to do it on this mattress, so we can see them looking outside like that sometimes.”

Custom-Ordered Safety Fence Set used in Wagen Rehabilitation Hospital Nagatake: External Volume: 2310 x 1310 x 425 (mm) Internal Volume: 1910 x 910 x 425 (mm) (without the mattress)

In that case, from the perspective of that user, would it be as if their world became a lot bigger?

(Mr. T): “Yes. I believe so.”

That makes us truly happy

(Mr. T): “Workers from Shigadry came to us many times to discuss not only height and length but also the mattress thickness and even the fence. Also, they said, ‘What if we change this…’ and provided us with multiple insightful pieces of advice. Day by day, the design of the fence just kept getting better.”

(Mr. T): “Workers from group homes, including us, envision patients living in a comfortable environment. However, when we do try to realize that, the question of ‘who we should consult first’ comes up. We initially wondered whom to consult, and when we tried to obtain off-the-shelf furniture, it would cost too much, so we were worried about how we could achieve all that we were planning. In such times, we were able to obtain Superflex in advance, and after some planning, we are currently using two Safety Fence sets. Honestly, there are many more places that we would like to use it, and so we are thinking of it right now.”

How does Mr. K feel about this?

(Mr. K): “Hmm… At first, ordering repairs didn’t go smoothly, so sometimes it could take up to a few days, but now, after having bought a repair film, I was able to fix it myself, so there was no more problem in that area.”

(Mr. K): “Of course, if there are any large cracks or deep holes that I cannot fix, we are consulting the workers of Shigadry. If possible, could you check the areas that I have tried to repair later?”

Then let’s check together later.

Standard repairs are done by our company, but in the event of an emergency, we have provided them with a “Repair Kit”, and instructed them on how to use it

[3] Do you have any problems with the standard mattress (Superflex) or the Safety Fence set?

(Mr. T): “Problems… I don’t think there are any large problems.”

For example, we are often told that our mattress can cause stuffiness, but what is your opinion in that area?

(Mr. T): “When we first used it, there were opinions like that. Although it differs with users, patients who perspire often or are heat intolerant need fans near them… We were taking small actions individually… but now you do not hear such complaints.”

(Mr. T): “We did have those opinions when we were using it as a sample, but after we officially purchased it, it wasn’t really a problem.”

(Mr. K) “That’s true. No one really complained. Not even once.”

If problems such as stuffiness return again, please consult us, as we have a product called Honeycomb Dry Pad that can take care of the issue.

How do you feel about the maintenance of it?

(Mr. T): “The hospital interior is being cleaned every day, and we are using chlorine-based disinfectants. We are wiping around the bed, the used meeting rooms, and the family rooms. Being able to wipe the Superflex and the Safety Fence with the same disinfectant is a great feature. If we use the disinfectant to wipe a normal mattress when it gets dirty, the surface of it becomes very hard, so it’s good that this does not happen to Superflex.”

[4] Do you have requests for our company or any products that you wish to have?

(Mr. T): “Hmm… I feel like the mattress is a bit too heavy for women to carry (haha). There are no handles to grab, so they can only do their best (haha).”

(We explained the details of the light weight model AX )

Regarding the handle, we explained that we kindly refuse to attach it as fluid and dirt can attach to it to create a dangerous and unsanitary environment

(Mr. K): “It’s not like we have to move it all the time, so we only have to put in big effort on some occasions (haha).”

It has been decided that they will be trying out the light-weight AX series during the next purchasing period

(Mr. T): “Also, there are patients staying in rooms with tatami mats, and we are thinking of using Shigadry products there as well. We were thinking of something a lot thinner than a mattress, so I was hoping we could consult you on this matter. I believe there were thinner products?”

Yes. Although it is not tatami-specific, we have a product called the Minimat. We provide not only off-the- shelf but also custom-ordered items. There are facilities that use it in their playrooms. In that case, it’s common to use ones with a thickness of 4 cm

(Mr. T): “I see. Please allow us to consult this at a later date.”

[5] Do you have any other thoughts or opinions that you would like to share with us?

(Mr. T): “When we were making the Safety Fence set, workers from Shigadry gave us many good pieces of advice, and so we were able to make an amazing product. (Looking at Mr. K) ‘Wasn’t Patient A’s mother and father ecstatic about it?'”

(Mr. K): “Yes. They were very happy about it.”

(Mr. T): “I think it’s great to be able to make something like that after discussing with everyone.” (Mr. K): “That is true. Including the current relationship with Shigadry, we are very thankful.”

(Mr. T): “We appreciate that the workers of Shigadry repair them quickly on site. But K is pretty much fixing everything now (haha).”

(Mr. K): “I became pretty proficient at fixing them (haha).”

We received answers from five representatives from four wards that are using products from our company

[1] Could you tell us the problems you were having prior to using our products?

  • (Mr./Ms. K): The method of pressure relieving using a pillow
  • (Mr./Ms. A): The mattresses we were using until now were hard, and we had to be specially careful to stop bedsores from developing.
  • (Mr./Ms. H): There was a patient who had recurring bedsores and skin problems.
  • (Mr./Ms. I): Pressure relieving the ear or the hip was difficult just with the cushion.
  • (Mr./Ms. K): The normal bed mattress required constant posture changing and bedsores

[2] What made you choose the products you are using currently from the variety of other products on the market?

  • (Mr./Ms. K): The fact that the pillow has a hole for the ear.
  • (Mr./Ms. A): It was already purchased, so I do not know
  • (Mr./Ms. I): It can be custom ordered according to the user
  • (Mr./Ms. I): Maintenance and repair are quick
  • (Mr./Ms. K): Its antibacterial and pressure distribution properties

[3] Could you tell us the merits of using the products from our company? Also, having actually used it, could you tell us if the problems you were having previously were solved by using this mattress?

  • (Mr./Ms. K): Due to pressure distribution, the condition of the ear improved.
  • (Mr./Ms. A): I don’t think we have to worry about bedsores usually.
  • (Mr./Ms. H): Whenever there is urine leakage, we can clean it just by wiping it, so it is easy to do
  • (Mr./Ms. H): There are patients that are recovering from bedsores.
  • (Mr./Ms. I): (Especially for patients who do not move as much) have better pressure distribution.
  • (Mr./Ms. K): The number of times we have to change the postures of the patients has reduced.
  • (Mr./Ms. K): We can maintain hygiene by wiping it.

[4] Do you have any requests for our company or any ideas on a product that you wish to have?

  • (Mr./Ms. K): I would like it if the material was more durable or if there were a wipeable cover
  • (Mr./Ms. A): Donuts Shape Pillow (The one with the hole for the ear)
  • (Mr./Ms. A): A mattress with better ventilation
  • (Mr./Ms. A): Custom-ordered positioning mattress for each and every patient
  • (Mr./Ms. H): The material of the surface creates stuffiness for some patients, so I wish it was made of a material with better ventilation
  • (Mr./Ms. H): Patients who rub their legs against the mattress can create tears
  • (Mr./Ms. H): Small tears can be fixed by repair tape, so it would be great if Shigadry could provide us with it.
  • (Mr./Ms. I): It retains too much heat, so I wish you could improve it.
  • (Mr./Ms. K): Although it is easy to repair with tape, it would be better if the surface was more durable
  • (Mr./Ms. K): I wish there was a circular cushion and not just square ones

[5] Do you have any comments or opinions on our company or our products? Please feel free to say anything

  • (Mr./Ms. A): We truly appreciate all that you do for us, including the maintenance
  • (Mr./Ms. H): The Shigadry mattress isn’t too soft, and it doesn’t sink too much, so it reduces the strain on the workers a lot more compared to other companies
  • (Mr./Ms. I): Your service and support help us greatly

1. Superflex B Series

"The incidence rate of bedsores in 2021 was "0%", partly due to the effects and achievements of hospital staff education and awareness raising, bedsore committee actions, and nutritional management of the patients."

In 2012, Social Welfare Service Corporation Seifukai Seifukai Hospital rented ‘Superflex B100’, including custom-ordered sizes, and in March 2021, ‘Superflex B100’ was purchased

Comments from the Head Nurse

  • The incidence rate of bedsores is decreasing
  • It doesn’t get dirty easily
  • Cleaning and disinfection of urine, stool, and salivary leakages can be done easily.
  • (The incidence rate of bedsores is reducing), partly due to the effects and achievements of hospital staff education and awareness raising, bedsore committee actions, and nutritional management of the patients

Numerical data

2015: Number of used mattresses (26/60 patients) → 22% risk of bedsore occurrence

2021: Number of used mattresses (50/60 patients) → 0% risk of bedsore occurrence

For users with low body temperatures (35°C) → the frequency of using the electrical blanket decreased

Comments from the Person in Charge of Rehabilitation

  • We are using the mattress and the Wheelchair Cushion, and I think that the maintenance is very easy and they do not sag at all. Even the areas that are in contact often do not deteriorate much, so I believe that they are great, long-lasting products.

  • Hereafter, we expect good customer service for future positioning cushion purchases

Comments from the Supervisor of Service

  • We can wipe it and clean it when it gets dirty.

  • A visiting family sat on the bedside and felt so comfortable that they bought one for their grandmother, who is bedridden at home (and whose bedsores do not recover). After having used it, they told us joyfully that the bedsores had recovered. They (the owner of the strawberry farm with hip pain) said – “I’m happy that we bought it. Now, I am using it.” They were very satisfied with it.

1. Superflex Series (Custom-Ordered)

"We purchased Superflex because we were able to custom order it according to the exact size and thickness for each of the beds in the facility."

Rehabilitation Center Kibou purchased 30 Custom-Sized Superflex Series. It is possible to customize the length and thickness of the mattress with our company.

Comments from Assistant Chief Nurse, Mr./Ms. Tajima

In 2012, we started using Superflex as a pressure mattress. It was recommended by a chief nurse from another group home for patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities when we were searching for a good pressure mattress.

Our center uses old beds, which have a variety of different sizes, and a standard mattress would create space around the mattress. This would be dangerous to the patients as their limbs could get caught in the space, so we filled the spaces with some handmade long pillows.

We purchased Superflex because we were able to custom order it according to the exact size and thickness for each of the beds in the facility.

Custom-sized Superflex fits perfectly and creates no spaces, so no creases form, and it does not move like it used to.

After that, we ordered 30 mattresses under the five-year rental contract. It has already started to be replaced, so we are able to use the pressure mattress without any sagging problems.

For the beds we have bought recently, we are using the pressure mattress from the company that made the bed, but they do not provide a quality check after purchasing it. The Shigadry mattresses that we are using even have repairs if the surface were to tear, and we are able to rent them every few years. I think Shigadry’s mattress is one of the best on the market.

"The best parts are that it prevents bedsores and that it is easy to keep them clean."

On September 2009, “Matsudo Tokushuen” started using the “Superflex A Series” and others, and then on February 2019, they began switching to the lineups, including the “Superflex AX Series”.

[1] Could you tell us the merits of using our products?

“I think that it’s great that the green ones (Superflex AX Series, refered hereon as “AX”) do not sink too much. It is also easy to keep clean. During urinary incontinence, an ordinary mattress would soak up so much that you couldn’t wipe away all of it.”

“Currently, we are using Superflex on a number of people who have sensitive skin, and they are getting bedsores less often.”

If possible, we would love to use it on all of them. (Haha)”

“Few years ago when I visited a friend in a rehabilitation facility, everyone was using that model of mattress, wasn’t it?”

“It was the same when my mother was admitted. All mattresses were clean.”

Deputy chief care worker (right) Ms.S and care worker (left) Ms.N, who have kindly spoken to us

It is not sure if the mattress mentioned here is our model

“It is easy to move the green mattress (“AX”). The blue ones we were using previously (Superflex A Type, referred hereon as “A”) were heavy, and funnily, we had to carry them over our backs to be able to move them (haha). If I could request something, I wish there was a three-fold type mattress.”

As we thought, was the previous mattress model (“A”) heavy?

“It was heavy. We needed two people to carry one of them (haha).”

“Also, does the green (“AX”) model have better ventilation? The users’ sweat would remain in the shape of their bodies on the sheets, but I think that no longer happens. So I thought that the ventilation had improved.”

Instead of just latex, which retains a lot of heat, the green (“AX”) uses a combination of latex and urethane as their internal material, which might reduce the stuffiness experienced by the users. If stuffiness continues to be a problem, we recommend the Hanikamu Dry Pad, which is currently in development.

Returning to the previous model, the blue type (“A”), were there any other problems?

“There were no problems except for weight.”

Then, comparing the newer green model (“AX”) to the previous blue model (“A”), is there any change in the frequency of bedsores?

“Maybe our care has improved (haha).”

“We have close to no people affected by bedsores. The moment anyone joins the facility, if we feel like they are prone to bedsores, we always use the green type (“AX”) or an air mattress.”

“The best parts are that it prevents bedsores and that it is easy to keep them clean.”

[2] Do you have any requests you would like to make to our company or any ideas for a product that you wish you had?

“Hmm… Wasn’t there something like a pillow? Was that a pillow?”

Of course, it can be used as a It can also be used to prevent bedsores by placing it under the calves. People in wheelchairs can use them under their arms to maintain proper posture. (The product in question would be the Flex Cushion Pillow.)

“So there are many ways to use it.”

Also, there seem to be some products that require repairing?

“Yes, these ones.”

Four wedge cushions were brought, which had their outer film peeling off.

“It could be that we are using them wrong, but this film on this part of the wedge is peeling off … It feels a little odd since we haven’t used it much yet …”

Since there were irregularities in how the film was applied, we brought it back for repair. The next morning, we delivered the repaired products

Were there any other problems?

“Hmm… no, there were no other problems.”

Previously, there seemed to be instances where the edge of the lamination of a case was cut, but do you encounter any similar issues now?

“Certainly. Some holes could be seen in them. Some users would playfully open holes back then, but now they cannot do it anymore.”

The strength of the lamination is much stronger than before. Sharp objects, such as pens or chopsticks, can still poke holes in them, however. In such cases, please contact us so that we can repair them for you.

[3] Would you like to say a few words about our company or our products?

“We are thankful that the Shigadry workers come to meet us often. When Shigadry talks to us and gives us phone calls, it helps us a lot.”

We truly appreciate Ms. S and Ms.N in taking their time to talk with us on important Thank you very much.

"Previously, when we were using a urethane mattress, it would retain urine and other stains, which took a lot of cost and time to clean and replace."

Special Elderly Nursing Home Keifuen uses Superflex AX Series and Wheelchair Flex Cushion. We have also received reviews on a positioning cushion (Care’g Cushion), which is currently in pre-release.

Comments on the pressure mattress (Superflex AX100) from a nurse, Mr./Ms. I

Previously, when we were using a urethane mattress, it would retain urine and other stains, which took a lot of cost and time to clean and replace. However, we are unable to professionally clean the mattress often, so on many occasions, we had to continue using it with the stains still remaining.”

“This time, we replaced the least clean mattresses with the AX100, which the staff also commented to be very good. Additionally, the unpleasant odor from the stain has disappeared, so both the cleanliness and the mood of the room have greatly improved.”

“Otherwise, we use it for people who are able to turn in bed by themselves. They seem to be able to face the side easily, as the mattresses do not sink too deeply. It is a lot easier even for the staff who are helping the users turn, so the mattress is popular for its ease of use by both the staff and the users.”

Comments on the pressure mattress (Superflex AX100) from a nurse, Mr./Ms. Y

“We were having problems with the stains on the mattress. Urine from urinal incontinence is not easily soaked, so we can easily wipe it off and maintain cleanliness.”

Comments on the trial positioning cushion (Care’g)

“We can shift the contents of the positioning cushion to control its thickness, so we no longer need to prepare many cushions to adjust the user’s posture. The surface also feels good to touch.”

We truly appreciate Mr./Ms. I and Mr./Ms. Y in taking their time to write the survey. Thank you very much
